Discover North Picardy

In the Baie de Somme area, less than one hour's drive from Calais and two hours from Paris, the village Pierre & Vacances of Belle Dune is surrounded by 250 acres of protected sand dunes along the Channel. Between the dunes and the large sandy beach of Fort-Mahon, a real playground is available for children and water sports lovers.

What to do in North Picardy

    Surroundings:
    - The Marquenterre Bird Park: The Marquenterre Bird Park can be found in the exceptional natural surroundings of the Bay of Somme. Find out about the many migrating birds as you enjoy the surrounding countryside. The nature reserve is a major stopover for storks and migrating birds on their long journey between Scandinavia and Mauritania.
    - La Maison de la Baie et de l'Oiseau: a unique place to learn about and observe birds.
    - Les Jardins de Valloires: near Authie, a magnificent landscaped park featuring over 5000 varieties of roses and rare shrubs, at the foot of a Cistercian Abbey.
    - Somme Bay railway: Travel 16 km through the salt marshes and pastures in an old steam or diesel driven locomotive.
    - Excursions in the bay, by boat or on foot, an opportunity to spot seals and discover the bay.
    - The Somme Valley: its multitude of small lakes, its peculiar water phenomenon of the "Puits Tournants", the Vaux Belvedere, Abbeville, Samara Park (25 ha), Amiens with its cathedral and Hortillonages (fertile marshland for market gardening) and the Naours Caves (refuges developed to create an actual underground city).
    - Authie bay and valley: Fort-Mahon Beach, the Forest of Crécy, Etaple sur Mer and its fisheries museum...
    - Henson: An equestrian centre which incorporates the culture of the "henson" breed in a beautiful environment (walks and exploring the region).
Explore the unspoilt nature of the MARQUENTERRA Park (1,000 ha) by foot, horseback or horse drawn carriage.
    - NAUSICAA at Boulogne sur mer: Immerse yourself in the largest European complex dedicated to the marine environment.

    Typical of Picardie.

Le Crotoy is a beach resort on France's northern coastline and is one of the three ports in the bay of Somme.

From its earliest years the commune of Le Crotoy has been highly active in maritime activities. Fishing, either from the docks, the beach or out to sea on a boat, make up one of the region's primary economies. Today the Le Crotoy Harbour also welcomes leisure craft.

    A church for seafarers.

The Saint-Pierre du Crotoy church was named parish church when the small sailors' chapel, consecrated to Saint Pierre, was demolished because it was in a bad state of disrepair. It took fifteen years for the new building to be complete. Only the 13th century square steeple was retained.
Inside, many votives placed by seafarers are hung on the building's walls.

    A church and its heritage.

Built in 1912, The Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc church did not escape Second World War bombings. Restoration work was carried out in the middle of the century.
Before entering the building, admire its ornate facade. In the choir, you can see many wrought iron features by Lambert Rucki as well as the stained glass windows by the glass artist Jacques Le Chevalier. Recently the new organ made from oak was installed in the buildings.
