From the Middle Ages till the present day.

Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Halles du Marché are one of the more popular areas in Dives-sur-Mer; possibly one of the top attractions in the whole of Normandy. Made entirely from stone and wood, the structure is startlingly well preserved - furthermore its ingenious design ensures that even in summer the atmosphere is cool. These historic "Halles" host the weekly market to this day…

    A chapel with a view.

Restored (with the help of Yves Saint Laurent) and now classed as a Historical Monument, the Saint-Laurent Chapel offers a stunning view over Deauville.

The ancient parish of Coteau district comprises important elements of Romanesque architecture, such as its arch of the twelfth century and windows that are strikingly similar to loopholes. The explanation for this oddity is that the building also served as a defence post for the people who sought refuge above the town.

    On the boardwalk…

Located on the sandy beach of Deauville, the famous boards form a broad boardwalk.

Created by the architect Charles Adda, responsible for the revamping of the beach huts, this promenade has, since its inauguration in 1923, become a symbol of Deauville.

Many major stars have trodden the boards. At the creation of the International Deauville American Film Festival, the names of the biggest American film stars were added to the bathing huts. So visitors can see the names of Marilyn, Harrison, Gene, Audrey and others. And visitors during the festival might even spot some celebrities taking the air.

    Beach babes and culture-vultures.

The Trouville museum, set up in the Villa Montebello, will tell you all about the history of this historic beach resort.

Ethnographic artefacts, along with rich art collections, retrace the history of this fascinating commune from different perspectives to give you a rounded view.

The museum's other halls are more focused, with for example a display space dedicated to Raymond Savignac and another to the André Hambourg collection. One of the galleries, on the dock of the harbour, hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

    Allied forces together.

On the historic morning of June 6, 1944, British troops landed at Sword Beach, the third and final British zone within the Normandy landing beaches, among them the British soldiers of the 8th Brigade, the Commandos of the first Brigade of the Special Services, including one led by Commander Kieffer.

This is the British Lieutenant General John Crocker who controlled all of these allied troops, coming to face the German soldiers at the end.

Today, at the Grand Bunker Museum, the Atlantic Wall Museum and the Museum of the 4th commando in Ouistreham you can relive the events at Sword Beach and all the landing beaches of Normandy.

    In memory of St. Teresa.

Built in 1929 by Pope Pius XI, the Basilica of St. Therese of Lisieux, was blessed in 1937 and consecrated in 1954. Its walls and those of the crypt are covered with mosaics that reflect the message of the Carmelite sister, better known as St. Theresa, a message based on the infinite love of God.

A reliquary contains the bones of St. Teresa's right arm. The saint died of tuberculosis in 1897 and was canonised in 1925.
